Despite efforts to increase the number of trained doctors and midwives, most pregnant women and sick children in poor countries are attended to by people with little or no formal training. It was our idea that we should make instructional films and animations aimed at them, that led us to form Medical Aid Films.

WATCH INTERVIEW
Fiona Laird

Fiona had spent 15 years as midwife and lecturer in many of the London maternities when she decided to join Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF). She was posted to Kalmia refugee camp in the war zone of Darfur in 2006. This was home to more than 100,000 internally displaced people. One day she arranged a training session for Traditional Birth Assistants (TBAs) and almost 1000 turned up. This showed her there was a real thirst for knowledge and training. She felt frustrated that her access to visual training aids which would have surmounted the language barriers were not readily available despite having a laptop in the field. Her experience inspired our first film and animation. Since 2007, Fiona has worked for the Maternity Service in Newham London and was appointed Maternity Modernisation Commissioner in 2008. She is the inspiration for a revolution in the commissioning and provision of Maternity Service in Newham which is one of the most deprived and challenging areas for healthcare in the UK.
