Make a film

GETTING INVOLVED

Making a training film might sound a bit daunting but you would not be alone as we will offer all the help you need. Find out how you could get involved in the film making process.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS:

I swear to consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art. (Hippocratic Oath, 4th Century BC).

As doctors and nurses we have a responsibility to pass on the knowledge that we have acquired. Many developing countries lack the infrastructure and training to tackle essential medical and public health issues. There is no worldwide network for healthcare workers to share ideas and experiences and a serious shortage of:

  • Trained doctors, nurses and midwives. Most medical care is left to health care staff with little or no formal medical training.
  • Appropriate training techniques.  Given the lack of formal training in the first place, the potential use of Western-style training manuals is ill-suited to the needs of local healthcare staff in developing countries.
  • Research on medical issues affecting the developing world. For that which exists there are insufficient established processes and channels to ensure that this information and research gets to the right people as quickly as possible.

We need your help to create a cycle of learning, using insights from the use of our materials to enhance the production of future films and animations SIGN UP Over the next three years, MAF will focus on the following issues about pregnancy and childbirth:

  • Basic antenatal care for pregnant women – preparing for pregnancy, healthy eating, exercise, preparing for birth.
  • Management of bleeding during and after delivery (post partum haemorrhage)
  • Neonatal resuscitation – how to revive a baby which is not breathing.
  • Management of pregnancy complications including pre-eclampsia, diabetes & malaria.
  • How to assist pregnant women who have been genitally mutilated.
  • Obstructed labour and Shoulder Dystocia.
  • How to deliver a breech baby and twins.
  • Caesarean section and instrumental delivery for nurses and midwives.

We also need entertaining films, showing malaria and diarrhoea prevention in children and basic treatment.  These films must be aimed at children to educate them about clean hands, clean water and the use of mosquito nets.

Make a film yourself (see pdf guide) or better team up with a professional film maker in your area.

Send your film to us by uploading it on the web-site or by posting it to us on DVD. Although quality of the image matters we must ensure that only the films with a medically sound message are displayed for viewing. All these films will be reviewed by our editorial board of medical specialists and film directors/producers to ensure the highest possible quality in a process similar to that of any peer-reviewed international medical journal SIGN UP.
