MAF Training Course to be implemented in Hyderabad, India in 2011
Last week Professor Eric Jauniaux, one of MAF’s founders travelled to Hyderabad, India, to lecture in an international course on Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Whilst there, he visited the Central Maternity Hospital in Hyderabad which provides outpatient care for around 1000 women per day and which also has around a staggering 100 deliveries per day. The centre, which has 80 Junior Drs and 100 Nurses, is one of the largest maternity hospitals in the world. There is a recognised need to develop a more sustainable teaching program to improve obstetric and neonatal emergency skills. MAF is planning to organise its first training course in India in November 2011. In order to make this course as sustainable as possible, we will be liaising with some of the region’s more senior doctors, providing them with the means to organise a more formal course going forward. This course can then be rolled out into the 3 government maternity hospitals as well as the private maternity hospitals in Hyderabad. Eric was also taken to visit Toopran District Health Clinic thanks to Dr Pranathi and her mother Dr Ramlakshmi. Here he was able to show one of our training modules on ‘Safe Delivery’ to the local medical officers and nurses. This has provided us with some very positive feedback as well as constructive criticism about the content of our films and how to adapt them to an Indian audience. Once these films have been completed, they will be very useful for training auxiliary nurses and health volunteers working directly in the villages. A further important outcome from the visit was that the staff at the Hyderabad Maternity Hospital and District Health Clinics were able to discuss with Eric which training topics they felt would be most essential to them. Their suggested topics were: Postpartum Haemorrhage Obstructed Labour Breech and Twin Delivery Shoulder Dystocia Antenatal Care Vaccinations MAF is very grateful to Dr Pranathi and her team for all their support and is planning to develop these modules. We will begin distributing them in November 2011 in the rural areas of Andhra Pradesh.
