Job description – Honorary Treasurer for Medical Aid Films

Medical Aid Films (MAF) is a charity that uses media to transform the health and wellbeing of women and children in developing countries. Its catalogue contains over 250 films in 22 languages covering topics from nutrition in pregnancy to obstetric complications, all available for free. Its films are watched over 3 million times each year by communities and health workers and used by over 2,000 organisations in over 145 countries. MAF share life-saving knowledge and skills, working with partners and organisations such as: UNICEF, WHO, AMREF, Econet Wireless, GE Healthcare, GSK, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

After 10 years of successful development, MAF is building for its next stage of growth. It is seeking an Honorary Treasurer to join its Board of Trustees. What will the right candidate get from joining the Board of Trustees?

Main responsibilities

  • On behalf of the Board of Trustees, to ensure that MAF’s financial obligations are met
  • Monitoring the financial administration of the charity and reporting to the board of trustees, in compliance with the governing document
  • Overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process

Main duties

Ensuring that MAFs financial obligations are met

  • To ensure MAF operates within the legal and financial guidelines under the current legislation
  • To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with good governance and legal and regulatory requirements
  • To work with and support the Finance Manager in order to be satisfied that the financial information presented is comprehensive and accurate
  • To oversee the management of the risk assessment process
  • To manage the process of appointment of the auditors
  • To be instrumental in the development and implementation of appropriate financial reserves and investment policies
  • To ensure the establishment of an adequate system on internal financial controls and to monitor its implementation and effectiveness
  • To act as a signatory on behalf of the Board of Trustees for financial matters

Ensuring the Board of Trustees fulfils its financial responsibilities

  • To report back on Finance to the Board of Trustees
  • To advise the Board of Trustees on the financial implications of its strategy and policy objectives
  • To guide and advise fellow Trustees in the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements
  • To inform the Trustee Board about its financial duties and responsibilities and to assist in developing their financial skills and understanding

 

 Responsibilities as a Trustee

The Honorary Treasurer will fulfil all those duties and responsibilities assumed when becoming a Trustee of MAF, namely:

  • Setting the charity’s strategic aims, objectives and direction.
  • Identifying risks arising from its activities
  • Managing those risks to ensure that the strategic aims and objectives are achieved.

The Honorary Treasurer will abide by the Trustee Code of Conduct

 

Person Specification for the MAF Honorary Treasurer

 MAF are particularly seeking applications from candidates who will have one of the following backgrounds:

  1. A senior accountant
  2. A CFO/Finance Director
  3. A financial management expert

Experience at a large charity with a successful trading arm, or experience setting up or managing finances for a social enterprise will be particularly appreciated.

  • Skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • Skills in interpreting and analysing financial information

Experience

  • Experience of organisation finance
  • Experience in setting and monitoring budgets
  • Financial qualifications (desirable)
  • Knowledge of financial reporting regimes

 

Term of appointment

Trustees are normally appointed for a period of three years, and may be reappointed for an additional term of three years.
