SCREEN: Working with audiences

At Medical Aid Films, audiences are at the heart of our work, which is why our mantra is:

ASK, then LISTEN, and ADAPT

Since our SCREEN audiences are primarily between the ages of 14 to 19 years, we involve them in all aspects of the project — from conception to survey development, from script drafting to filming, and much more. We are blown away by these fantastic young people.  They speak freely and openly about difficult topics with courage and conviction. We believe this collaboration makes our films accessible, educational…and entertaining.  We hope you agree!

We don’t work with actors – we work with REAL-LIFE CONTRIBUTORS

We know that young people living in rural communities across Zambia are best equipped to tell the story, and they do so with such passion and pride. The recruitment process is a complex one. Working with our in-country partners, we visited rural communities to identify young people who are comfortable in front of the camera and willing to be a part of the production.  Then we conduct interviews to make sure their experiences align with the messaging.  As a bonus, we always learn something through this collaboration, which we incorporate into our scripting.

You might ask – ‘Why do you use scripts if they’re not actors?’

Our scripts are designed to be a dynamic and living document.  They serve as a guide to our film crews to support the production process from start to finish.  On set, our producers also ASK, LISTEN and ADAPT.  But it’s not confined to the production in rural Zambia.  Like all our projects, Medical Aid Film’s staff, in-country partners, and advisors contribute to the work happening on the ground.

The more input we receive…the more diverse the advice…the better the product. We hope you join us for the ride!
